Matthews Memorial Hospital –
The History
Mrs. Matthews, the founding sponsor of Matthews Memorial Hospital, lost her husband and didn’t want others to face the same loss of a loved one due to non-existent health care.
The original hospital burnt down and was replaced by funds generated through the original trust set up by the Matthews family and fundraising efforts of the MMHA.
Doctor Trefry worked in at MMH and his research helped Gout sufferers’ world wide.
Equipment was purchased through the fundraising efforts of the Matthews Hospital Auxiliary and the MMHA.
Running of MMH was carried out by the Red Cross until 1984 when the Red Cross opted to give up running hospitals, altogether.
MMH was then leased to the Plummer Hospital in 1984 for a cost of $1/yr and ended up becoming a satellite site when Plummer merged with the Sault Area Hospital.
